So why would a young, good looking woman like that go and have the amount of plastic surgery she had? I actually had never heard of this woman until she got her plastic surgery, then all of the sudden there were Heidi Montag before and after plastic surgery photos everywhere.

I look at the Heidi Montag before plastic surgery photos and I think there are probably thousands and thousands of woman who would love to look like that.

What a shame that young, beautiful women feel they have to undergo dangerous surgeries to feel beautiful. And I wonder if Heidi Montag does feel beautiful now, or if she's only seeing her faults and will continue to have plastic surgeries.

And ok, so she didn't like her nose, so get a nose job and be done with it. But did you see what she did to her boobs? Good God! She looks like she's got two basketballs sewn into her chest. Did she really need breasts that large?

Now I think she looks like a barbie doll - literally, with plastic sheen and all. Take a look at these Heidi Montag before and after plastic surgery photos and tell me I'm wrong. Poor thing. She also now looks about 10 years older.

And my god those breasts! (Sorry I keep going back to Heidi Montag's breasts, they're just so out of proportion to her body.) Do women these days really need to turn themselves into walking boobs in order to be considered sexy? What is this world coming to?
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! They claimed I was harassing and abusing other members by having it posted.

My protest-art has the words "Summertownsun sucks". I put this artwork up in protest of Summertownsun (sellers of Luna Girl vintage photos) complaining that I was infringing on their copyrighted work. They said I was posting images that they own. So flickr removed the images. But the images are actually in the public domain. So I protested Summertownsun's actions by creating a piece of artwork and posting it on Flickr.

Then Flickr (or as I now like to call them, Fluckr), in all its controlling, tightwad glory, removed that image too, and sent me an email which said, "

Hi dazzlecat,

In joining Flickr, you agreed to abide by the Terms of
Service and Community Guidelines. Specifically, you must
not abuse, harass, threaten, impersonate or intimidate
other Flickr members. We've removed the content, "SummertownSun Publishing
Sucks!", from your photostream. Please note that similar
activity may result in the termination of your account
 without warning.

 Regards,

 Omar

"

So what really happened here? Was I harassing other members? NO! The simple fact is that Flickr censored my artwork!!! All because someone (I am assuming summertownsun) complained.

I sent out an email to all my contacts on Flickr letting them know I was deleting my account and why. Now I'm going to have to make another piece of protest-art called Flickr Sucks!

PS. I've released this image into the public domain. I've been sooo busy with a million other projects. Just published my first paper doll book called Indian Kitty Powwow Princess which can be bought on Amazon.com. Details can be found at my art website: www.paperdollcats.com

So anyway, back to this topic. I've now gone 10 months without a visit from my "best friend". I've always hated that term. What other terms are there for menstration? I'm coming up with nothing. Help me out here ladies.

Anyway, back to lack of seeing my best friend. YEAH!!!! I'm free, free, free at last. I'll take the hot flashes and night sweats over "my best friend" any day. and now it looks like I really get to. I think women in this society (America) should start rituals that celebrate 1) getting your first period and 2) hitting menopause. I wouldn't bother celebrating perimenopause cause that's so unclear, and it could go on FOR EVER. Luckily for me, it only lasted about 1 year.

So long B.F. I'd say I miss you but that would be a big, fat lie.
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! I had a really hard time finding any photos until I came upon a blog called kodiakkonfidential. The site had about 5 photos of Courtney Carroll, the new Miss Alaska. She's an accomplished, beautiful young woman who beat out many other women for the title. And yet, the comments that were left on the site all focused on what she looked like. And most of the comments were NOT pretty. Commentors starting rating her, sayings stuff like: "Humph. I'd give her a 6. Slim pickens up there, huh?" (you can read all the comments here: http://kodiakkonfidential.blogspot.com/2007/12/miss-alaska-usa-redux.html)

I was so mad I left a comment: "OMG you people are all snobs!! this young woman is beautiful: tall, thin, full head of hair, big white teeth, pretty face. What the frack more do you need to be considered beautiful these days. You're obviously basing your definitions of beauty on what you see on tv. And besides that, State Pagaents are based on more than just outside beauty. Good grief!!"

And I'm still pissed off about it. I can't seem to let it go. If this young woman isn't considered beautiful, then what about the rest of us? Are men (and women) in this society now being taught to consider anyone who isn't "model perfect" to be ugly? We need to stop the insanity!!!
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! There's an article on ABC News about women in China going under the knife to have more "western" eyes, fuller lips, bigger breasts and longer legs (a painful procedure where they break the leg bones and insert robs to make the legs grow a few more inches). Ouch!!!

There's even a beauty contest for women who have had plastic surgery. I suppose that the majority of U.S. beauty pageant entrants have also had some plastic surgery, but we don't talk about that. The photo shown here is of winners of China's beauty pageant for women who have undergone plastic surgery. (AP Photo)

The article says that the new beauty standard in China is "whiter, thinner and taller." It's so sad to see those beautiful Asian women wanting to look white. It's something that women of color here still struggle with. I myself am American Indian and even though my generation has embrace our ethnic beauty; there are still lots of women striving to be "blonde and blue eyed".

Have you noticed the diet/exercise commercials on TV: whenever they show before/after photos of women who've lost weight they have almost always become a blond, too. What is this crap about "blondes having more fun" anyway?

Its sad to see women in other parts of the world trying to look like our immaciated, boney, starving white models. How many of us actually look like that?

So the U.S. continues to spread its insane definition of "beauty" to other countries. oh joy...
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! They were talking about the photos of her on a beach in a bikini, with her full breasts, womanly hips, and curves. Oh my god, she looks like a real woman, and they were calling her fat.

I am so glad that I'm not a teenager in this day and age. But I do feel afraid for all those young girls out there who are eating this media crap up and thinking they have to be skinny, sickly looking twigs in order to be considered beautiful.

I love Love Hewitt's response to the media crap:

"I’ve sat by in silence for a long time now about the way women’s bodies are constantly scrutinized. To set the record straight, I’m not upset for me, but for all the girls out there that are struggling with their body image. A size 2 is not fat! Nor will it ever be. And being a size 0 doesn’t make you beautiful. What I should be doing is celebrating some of the best days of my life and my engagement to the man of my dreams, instead of having to deal with photographers taking invasive pictures from bad angles. To all girls with butts, boobs, hips and a waist, put on a bikini - put it on and stay strong."

Love Hewitt is a size 2 and is about 5' 4" tall. She's a SIZE 2 and is being called fat. I'm a size 10, does that make me obese?

Women need to start fighting back about this weight thing. Especially women in Hollywood.
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! Headaches, fatigue, and a never ending pain in my upper back have left me feeling really, really sick.

But what's making me feel even sicker is having to listen to the latest on that twenty-something, airhead Britney Spears. For Christ Sakes, who cares? I sure as hell don't. Why are all the media shows and even the NEWS shows going on and on about this fracked up woman? I have to keep switching channels every time her name/face pops up on the screen because I just can't take it anymore.

I keep thinking about what TV was like when I was a teenager. I don't remember this kind of insanity getting coverage. The news seemed to have real news stories. What has happened to the media? Who has taken over and why are they filling the free airwaves with this trash? I am absolutely sick of hearing about famous young girls getting thrown in jail, knocked up, married, divorced, ect. ect.

How about some real news? I think I finally figured out why I've gained over 10 pounds in the last couple of years. (After having maintained about the same weight for the previous decade.) Its caused by that no good
PERIMENOPAUSE!!!! Arrrggggg!!!!!

I've been doing some reading up on my new "friend". And it seems that perimenopause AND menopause have been known to cause weight gain in many, many women.

Now I do have to admit that weight gain isn't all that bad sometimes. For instance, I used to be a steady weight of around 137 lbs. (I'm 5' 8" in height), now I'm about 147. So my pants don't fit me anymore, and my shirts are too tight around the waist to button. BUT on the upside I am no longer cold all the time. And that's a BIG plus, cuz I've spent my whole life always being cold. and it hasn't been fun. Aside from that, that's about the only plus I an think of with having gained weight.

On doing an investigation of my new friend, I've found out some interesting things. It is believed that hormone levels associated with menopause cause weight gain. Great! Thanks!

But, according to my sources, that's not the only cause of weight gain. Aging and lifestyle also play a part in how our body changes as we age. Lifestyle part: I am most guilty of. I blog, read, watch tv. Bike riding and walking? Don't do much of that anymore.

Menopausal women tend to exercise less, eat more, and burn fewer calories. Yup, sounds like me. The result is a shift in our body from less muscle to more fat, and that causes a slow down in our metabolism, which then causes more weight gain and less muscles tissue, which then causes lower metabolism, which then..... ahhhh, its a catch 22.

Weight gain can cause health problems, but excessive weight gain during menopause can also increase our chances of developing serious conditions. Studies have shown that women who gain over 20 pounds after menopause increase their risk of getting breast cancer by about 20 percent. Women who lose 20 pounds after menopause (are there really women out there who have done that?) reduce their breast cancer risk by about 23 percent. (Oh, I sound so Phd.-ish.)

Of course, it is within our power to keep this from happening. Exercise, good diet, strength training, blah, blah, blah will keep us from gaining tons of weight and developing health problems. I really wish blogging was on that list.

My investigations have also relieved that women who are in menopause require less than 200 calories a day to maintain their weight. 200 calories!!!!! Oh my god!! Can anyone stay alive on 200 calories?!!!

So what I've found out is if I eat a healthy diet and exercise while still in perimenopause, I'm less likey to gain even more weight when menopause sets in. (In otherwords, perimenopause is just the beginning of the weight battle!) Time to stick my head in the sand and pretend I never heard of any of this. Its going to be a very tough battle me thinks.
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! I've had two visits from "my best friend" in that time. And so I was very happy, thinking that it was all over now, and I wouldn't have to deal with all that womanly crap anymore. (i've never liked having my period. some women talk like its some wonderful experience, but not me.)

As a younger woman I never thought about menopause, let alone premenopause. I didn't even know premenopause existed until a couple years ago. I thought I'd just come upon menopause one day, and it'd all be over – no more periods, no more tampoons, cramps, bloating, ect. ect.

BUT NO!!!! I am now told that premenopause lasts for years. and then you go into menopause, which has its own downsides. I swear to god, it really sucks being the mother of mankind. Men don't know how lucky they have it.

So i've been dealing with hot flashes, and they are slow roasting me from the inside out. I now must dress in multiple layers because I can go from cold to roasting in a matter of minutes. It usually starts with my face, I'll feel it start to get hot and flush. and then it spreads to my chest and torso.

And when I'm not dealing with hot flashes, I'm dealing with what I call phantom periods. I have all the signs of a period: bloating, cramps, tiredness, crabbiness. Just no blood.

I've been told premenopause can last for years. I have an older friend who's in her early 60's who says her premenopause lasted for 10 years!!!! I have hit premenopause at a pretty early age (46). Most women don't hit it until in their mid-50's. so i guess that's a positive for me.

Anyway, enough with the complaining. I'm still looking for ways to deal with the hot flashes, although I have been using soy products that seem to help decrease how often they happen. I'd love to hear what other women are using to cope with premenopause.
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! I posted some of the answers in my previous blog, and there's still people answering the question. So I'm posting a couple more reponses.

The one from Kdawg68 is very interesting and other men have told me this too. Read his post:

---- From kdawg68:
When we meet a woman for the first time, a process occurrs in our brains that takes about 1/10000th of a second. It's a fascinating process that for each individual is slightly different. Mine evidently tends to look for a cute face, nice juicy squeezable butt, pretty feet with cute well pedicured toes, and a tan complextion - but the end result is the same in each of us. Our brains compute and spit out a simple decision:

Yes or No?

That's it. Those are the two categories. I either would or would not have sex with the individual. "

kdawg68's blog

------

I don't know if women think the same way, I know that I don't. I don't size up a man in the first millisecond of meeting him and decide whether or not I'd sleep with him. I actually don't think about having sex with any man that I meet unless he's absolutetly gorgeous or sexy in some way. otherwise sex doesn't enter my head at all.

But a few women on the survey said they think the same way. I think they must be exceptions, not the norm.

Another blogger wroter this:

--- From mugshot:
not too often....SEX...but they say men thinkg...SEX....about sex every .....SEX SEX SEX.... seven seconds, for me its more.......SEX SEX SEX like every few minutes SEX SEX.

mugshot's blog ----

hilarious. i love blogging.
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! I can tell by the conversation I had with my mom and sister last night over dinner at a local restaurant. I don't even remember how we got on the subject of sex, but we found ourselves talking about when my mom was younger (in her mid thirties) and me and my sister were still kids. My mom mentioned dating some men and I told her I didn't know she had dated anyone when she and my dad had broken up (among one of their many breakups). I said that she never brought any men home so I thought she never dated. She mentioned something about "the back seat of a car", at which point my sister and I burst into laughter for about five minutes straight.

I've never heard my mom talk about dating, sex – or anything of a very personal nature for that matter. (My mom has remained a mystery most of my life.) So my sister and I were surprised and tickled to death when she opened up about her dating exploits and made a joke about the back seats of cars.

Then she told us she hadn't had sex in over 30 years. Yikes!!! And she wondered how it would be if she had sex again after all these years. She said if she was making out in the back seat of a car now, she's probably get all cramped up. That was followed by another five minutes of loud laughter from us.

I told her now that her children were grown and out of the house, she didn't need to resort to the back seats of cars. And then I told her about that woman who hadn't had sex for 30 years and started sleeping with men after placing a classified ad in the paper. And then wrote a book about her sexual exploits. (I wrote about this earlier in my blog. I still can't remember the name of that book or the author.) So I told my mom maybe she should put an ad in the paper and see how many responses she gets. She could have men flying in from all over the country just to have a weekend sexual encounter with her. and then she could write a book about it. (that was another good laugh.)

So the new year looks likes its going to bring good things: more open communication with my mom; a better understanding of my mom by me, and maybe some sexual encounters for my mom (although I wouldn't hold my breath on that one). Happy New Year!!!
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! So i posed the question on my blogcatalog page "How often do you think about sex?".

so far I have about 50 responses (some are repeat responders, I guess cuz they think about sex sooo much that they needed to respond more than once. :-)

And what I found was actually very amazing. Most of the men laughed at the concept of ONLY thinking about sex 10 times a day. It seems they think about sex once every 8 seconds. YIKES!!! How is it that the male species has managed to run the world up till now? How do they get anything done?!!!

Some of the anwers from the survey were very funny, so i'm listing some of them here for you to read. and i'm also providing links to their blogs as a thanks for answering my survey.

From ModelElaine:
"I have more sex then I want to think of LOL, so while I am not having sex, I don't even want to think about it, and while I am having sex I think of something else"
ModelElaine's blog

From Xight:
"Being the average male, about 6 times while writing and posting this comment."
Xight's blog

From dannyvice:
"Well statistically, I think the Kinsey Institude determined it to be about every 8 seconds for males.... I hate that. Just because my blog talks about women and sexual issues, the google ad search engines thinks I'm some porn page that needs porn ads to go with it. again i say, grrrrr!!!

Its really amazing to me how much of a focus our society has on sex. I've been looking for affiliate products to promote and researching what the top sellers are. And most of them are sex products: penal enlargements, viagra, ect. Why am I surprised? I guess I'm just an old fashioned girl.

What's really interesting to me is how often men think about sex. I saw somewhere that the average man thinks about sex 10 times a day. Wow!!! I think about sex MAYBE 10 times a week, and that's an above average week for me. sometimes I don't think about sex for days at a time.

So now they have this new stuff out for women that will make them horny. I'm not knocking it, maybe if I had this stuff when I was married my marriage would have been happier. Or at least, our sex life would have been better. I was married to a man who wanted sex EVERY DAY. And if we did have sex in the morning, he was already horny again by evening. Jezzzz. I on the other hand, wanted sex about once a week. They say sexual incompatability is one of the top 3 reasons people get divorced. yes, I know that struggle well.

I'm not against promoting sex, I'm just against promoting women as sex objects. So i promptly deleted the google ad from my page. I guess I'll have to hand-pick my ads from now on. Sorry if that ad offended anyone.
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! There was a very nice meal and a speaker present, talking about funding in the nonprofit community. And of course there were the usual community members there that i always see at theses gatherings.

There was a gorgeous guy there that I've known for several years now. But of course, he's married. But every time I see him, I want to jump his bones.

[Let me first explain: I've been divorced now for almost 7 years and in that whole time, I've only had sex a couple of times. The last time being almost two years ago.]

Anyway, there he was in all his handsomeness and sexy gray suit. [long sloppy drool.] And there I was - single and without sex for over a year and a half (and no prospects in site). I fantasized about pushing him into the nearest closet. I'm sure some of you single women can understand. But if he was available, would I really have sex with him?

Anyway, it all made me think about that 60 year-old woman who wrote a book about her experience of not having sex for 30 years. No, that's not a typo, THIRTY years. And then decided for her sixtieth birthday to sleep with a man - any man who was willing. So she put an ad in the local paper and said she wanted to have sex for her birthday and if interested, to send her a photo and info about themselves. She hoped she'd get one response - she got over seventy.

So why did seeing this gorgeous, married man make me think about this woman? (I wish I could remember her name and the title of her book. Did I mention she wrote a book about it all.) I had to ask myself that question. And two answers came up. First, I never want to go 30 years without having sex. (six years is bad enough, and I've been there.) And second, men are dying to have sex with willing women. So what's stopping me, and lots of other women, from having casual sexual encounters? And why is it so easy for men to have them?

Is it the biological thing? Or is it having been brought up in a time when it was taught that girls who had casual sex were sluts. I really don't have the answer to that. I just know that even though I fantasize about having casual sex, when I really think about putting a plan in place to do it, I always chicken out. In fact, I never even get a plan into place, I chicken out on planning a plan.

Frigid, uptight? I'm sure that's what some men would call me. I know that I am not either of those things, and that men tend to use those terms to defend against rejection. So what is it that keeps a lot of us women over 40 from having casual sex; even when we are horny as hell, and fantasizing about being in a dark closet with every good looking man we see. And I know I'm not alone in this. I have friends who've been without sex even longer than I have.

I have no answers, only questions and lots of unfulfilled fantasies. But I do know that I want to figure it out - and break out of that pattern - cuz damn it, I want sex!
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! Its called FirstWivesWorld. Not sure why, because we women are SO MUCH more than "wives", and certainly after a divorce when we are no longer wives. (Over 40 and Feeling Fine is not about being someone's x-wife.)

Aside from the lame name I really like the site. What I've seen of it so far anyway. (So many websites, so little time). They have a place for women to share their stories and get advice on all types of things that us divorcees are in need of.

There's a two part article on hot flashes, something I'll have to read when I have more time. Cuz my hot flashes are slow roasting me from the inside out.

The site also has something called "intimate portraits" which has video posts from women who have gone through, or are going through, divorce. Some very powerful and supportive stuff here. Darlinks, you simply must check it out. :-)

Got any great sites you think I should take a look at? let me know.

Until next time.
Over 40 and feeling fine!!! Actually, it might not be my "first" since I do have a website (see above link) that posts all my pages into a blog format. My website is about the healing power of art. Its a place where I share my love of art with the world. I've been working on that for about a year and a half, and its a labor of love for sure.

Anyway, this blog is about my life as a 40-something, single woman. A fine place to be if I do say so myself. I love being over 40. Yes, there are days when I feel old, ect. But for the most part, I feel happier than I've ever been. In my twenties I was just plain "lost": didn't have a clue who I was, where I was going, or what I wanted in live. When I was in my 30's I was married and working hard at that. Nobody bothered to inform me that marriage was a lot of Freaking Work!!! I think my hubby and I had role reversal issues: he always wanted to "talk" about our issues. I just wanted to get along.

So now I'm happily divorced and living with my two cats - who are my children. What can i say, I am one of THOSE kinds of women. I love cats - in fact, about half of all my artwork is about cats. I call myself a "cat artist". One hundred years from now when art teachers talk about artists, my name will be among the most influential cat-artists of the 21st century. ayyy.

So I've been learning what it means to be a single woman over forty in this beauty/youth obsessed culture. And I've been learning new things about the female body too - I've hit menopause. Thank God!! I think if i have to have one more visit from my "best friend" I'll going postal.

I also learned that I'm allergic to gluten, so I can no longer eat bread or pasta. Its changed my life, but mostly for the good because now I'm not dragging myself through my utterly exhausted life anymore. I have my energy back. Yeah!!! And I also have fibromyalgia, which is why I said I'm learning about what its like being over 40. Our bodies DO start falling apart (don't know if i ever really believed that until now).

So being over 40 is a new adventure for me. I'm single; I have new body issues; I am back on the "market" after a 10 years absense. (I've been divorced for about 5 years now and tried the various new dating techniques out there.)

So these are the issues I'll be sharing with whoever wishes to read my blog. And I'd love to hear other women's experiences too. Even if you not over 40, you can learn from the masters. ayyy. I hope to hear from all you fabulous over 40 women and anyone else who feels like sharing.

May all your days be filled with creativity and color. Until next time.
Over 40 and feeling fine!!!
